The New Jeep Wrangler JL: What We Know So Far

Posted by Gillian Fournier on 7th Nov 2016

Eric and I spent a greater amount of our Monday afternoon scouring the forums and media pages for the latest updates of the newest Jeep Wrangler model, the JL and pickup model (JT). Wouldn't you know, with a few clicks of the mouse and some time reading and researching, we were able to find out a decent amount to deliver to you and keep you up to date!

Probably the most awaited SUV expected to be released next year is the all new Jeep Wrangler JL (and the pickup truck style JT). Along with sharing the roads, and trails, with the current JK and late model Wranglers TJ, YJ and CJ, this next generation Wrangler is set to include lots of new features such as new front and rear end designs and, our favorite, the pickup truck!

Depictions of the JL were released by JL Wrangler Forum early this month, and updates remain current on their page. We're very excited to see what's in store. This model will most likely have a more aerodynamic design and come with upgraded LED lighting, as introduced on the current 2017 models. It will have an aluminum-intensive body and will be available in two and four door models. Please keep in mind, the following pictures and information is not 100% set in stone and are not Official Jeep Illustrations.

From what we see when we first look at the prototypes is that the design is fairly similar to the current JK. Jeep and Fiat Chrysler have had so much success with the current model, why go messing with the design and risking further progression?

The top portion of the grill seems to slope back which hasn't been seen since the TJ models 1997-2006. The more-raked grill and windshield are likely to improve the vehicle's aerodynamics. The headlights sit a bit more recessed into the outer most grill slots, much like the CJ models. The front turn signals have been moved to the edge of the fenders, rather than sitting below the headlights. The front bumper closes the gap with the front fenders, similar to the European style Wranglers. The rear also looks like it has a bit of rake to it and the taillights pay homage to the Jerry-can-inspired X-pattern that is seen on the current Jeep Renegade. The FCA prototypes haven't given up too many secrets on the roof, but rumor has it the roof will be more permanent. Although the roof itself will not be removable, the top and side panels will be, providing you with multiple configurations to play around with. This would be a huge benefit in weight reduction by doing away with the separate roll bar structure which is displayed in the current JK, while also improving the structural rigidity and crash safety.  The new Wrangler will also feature Goodyear tires, swapping from the current  BF Goodrich tires. The other biggest change that will be coming, aside from the roof, is what's under the hood. The JL with feature all new engine options including the Pentastar 6, Hurricane Turbo 4 and 3.0L Diesel as well as the all new 8-speed transmission.

Having a heart attack over all the new changes yet? No worries....a lot of the trademark features on the current JK look like they'll be carried into the new JL design including the exposed door hinges (because #DoorlessIsLife), tailgate mounted full-size spare tire and similar cut door and window lines.

The Jeep Wrangler JT pickup model is set to debut in late 2017 and will be the first pickup in Jeep's showroom since the beloved Comanche. The engines are rumored to include 3.6L V-6, 2.0L turbo four and possibly a diesel (please! please! please!) The six-speed manual and eight-speed automatic seem like they'll be likely candidates as well as utilizing the same weight-saving aluminum body panels as the JL.

Stay tuned for the latest JL updates!
