2018 Jeep Wrangler JL/JLU: First Look at the Production Interior

Posted by Gillian Fournier on 12th May 2017

As many of you have already seen, or heard, the folks over at JL Wrangler Forums announced that the pre-production JLU was spied near Auburn Hills the other day. They were able to get a few shots of the updated interior and the changes that will soon be coming.

  • Dashboard layout
  • New "infotainment" screen (with options available)
  • New sleeker, cleaner trim
  • Buttons and switchgear that will provide all new safety, convenience and technology
  • Newer features
  • Overhead console/interior roof

Modern Dashboard

The new JL dashboard, at first look, appears to be a much more updated and modern design.

  • More symmetrical look
  • The passenger grab bar handle no longer features the debossed "Jeep- Since 1941"  emblem.
  • The central dash piece envelopes the air vents, UConnect screen and gauges
  • The ignition switch is no longer there- the new JL will feature a push-to-start button
  • The finish and trim is newer, sleeker and cleaner
  • The dashboard panel appears to be a one-piece smooth plastic finish in a deep red
  • Silver trim lines the air vents and button clusters as well as the stalks (3, 6 and 9 positions) on the steering wheel
  • The steering wheel appears to be more concave
  • These photos are likely to be from a fully optional Rubicon but this is what the base interior materials and trim will most likely look

New "Infotainment" System

The new JL information/entertainment system includes plenty of new features, some which are seen on the new 2017 Grand Cherokee model.

  • Comes with the current UConnect system in 3 available sizes: 5", 7" and 8.4"
  • Touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • 8.4" screen comes equipped with the new Off-Road Pages feature as seen in the 2017 Grand Cherokee model. This system includes features such as wheel articulation, t-case status, pitch and roll, transmission temps, suspension and monitor basic essentials like oil and coolant temps, battery voltage and oil pressure.
  • The screen can operate as a touch screen and can also be controlled using the physical dials: power and volume, menu selection, zoom in/out for navigation

New Updated Features

The JL will retain the physical buttons to control climate, radio/stereo, safety/convenience, performance (traction control, parking sensor, front sway bar disconnect).

  • Heated steering wheel
  • Parking sensor that ties into the back up camera
  • Engine auto start/stop button
  • Push-to-start button
  • Four auxiliary control switches

Overhead Console/Interior Roof

From the looks of it, the interior of the JL looks slightly longer and taller than the current JK Wrangler.

  • Large overhead console with what looks like two sets of microphone holes
  • Above the console there is a long lever/button. It's use or function is unknown at this time
  • Built-in HomeLink garage door opener
  • Built-in A-Pillar grab bars on driver and passenger side
  • Thicker stalk on rearview mirror has what could be a power switch for dimming the rearview
  • From the outside, it appears there are grab handles for the rear passengers as well (in the 4 door model, at least)
